He is.

By many. He’s technically far above a Jerry Herman, for example, and I don’t care what snobbery abounds regarding hits and such. The fact is this question is inflammatory and is not really fair.

His work has touched millions, has actually saved a life (mine) and is interesting (not always equally so).

Some of his shows are pure fun, some are weak, some rank among the greatest ever written.

His shifting meter is consistently interesting, at times revealing.

Is he Rodgers (his idol)? No. Is he the equal to a Sondheim? Of course not. And thank god.

But, at least in my life and family, he is as equally loved.

And I think that’s what actually matters.

Whether we like it or not phantom of the opera will live on for years not only in theaters but also in piano bars. Cats will not.

It won't? I imagine "Memory" will outlive just about any other ALW tune.

Well said.

I often say - and am often met with eye rolls - ALW’s influence and stature exist and will persist whether you like him or not. As a layman who doesn’t adore some of his work, including the piece* still running, I am awed by his gift for melody. Off the charts. So to speak.

*full disclosure; yet posting this I’m now humming “Prima Donna,” as I did, perhaps reluctantly, in my youth.
