I see his name sometimes listed among them. I am not his biggest fan, but even if most of his shows originated in London, at a certain point in his career, it was expected that they would almost always also be produced on Broadway soon thereafter. He counts as a Broadway composer in a way that Novello didn't and much, much more than, say, Bart, Heneker, Wilson, even Newley and Bricusse, arguably even Coward (although I think Coward might reasonably be regarded as both London and Broadway).
Whether he is as good as some of the other greats is a matter of opinion, but at minimum the sheer number of performances on Broadway makes him a very important Broadway person. |
