I might have walked out at intermission if it hadn't won Best Musical and if I didn't have a friend in the cast. I thought it was insultingly lazy writing in the script and score. It definitely delightful, enlightened and held the attention of the tourists around me who had never seen the kind of movies and plays that did the same stuff better, they went for every beat of it. So who am I to say, it sure ran awhile. But I found it boring and eye-roll-inducing at times, in addition to lazy and often cliche writing. I'm very glad that it was a hit though... that means it was getting through to and entertaining people who hadn't seen that kind of thing before, or needed to see it. So far that I'm glad.
But Matilda was a better musical, for me. |
