Completely caught off guard by "Matilda" the movie
Posted by: GreatMartin (greatmartin2003@yahoo.com) 12:35 am EST 12/27/22

Have never seen or heard or read "Matilda" before and most reviews I read about it when it opened on Broadway and was shown on TV didn't pique my interest. I have no idea why I watched it on streaming tonight except for being a fan of Emma Thompson!!
Alish Weir as Matilda blew me away and I have to see what Lashana Lynch, as the teacher, has done because I want to see more of her. Thompson as always was excellent. The kids were impressive and on first hearing I liked the score.

Reading your post and having had the movie recommended by other friends, I decided to give it a try. A little background: I was totally uninterested by what I read about the stage production and never saw it. Nothing about it resonated with me. So maybe I have"mellowed" in the interim. But this movie worked really well for me. I think Warchus did an outstanding job of making a movie out of what clearly was a show made for the stage and of finding a way to locate the story in the fantasy world it inhabits. Do I think the movie is perfection? Not completely. But it is compelling enough to keep me well engaged for 2 hours and moved frequently. The performances by the three leads (E Thompson, L Lynch, and A Weir) were terrific. I was particularly impressed with how Lynch and Weir modulated back and forth between fantasy and (some kind of ) reality. I will say that the Revolting Kids sequence was heavier handed than I enjoyed, but it works and it works out well, so all good by me. Thanks to you and to the board for the encouragement to watch it. I'm very glad I did.

"Matilda" was one of the most experimental musicals ever to play Broadway. I saw in once a year for four years, and its extremes never failed to surprise me. I loved it, but it was disturbing. "Matilda The Musical" is another accomplishment - not as thoroughly strange as the stage show, which never seemed to take place in the real world - but definitely a major accomplishment. It was inevitable that a lot of good songs would be cut (about half, I think), but you'd have to know the stage musical or OBC recording to know.

I'd be interested to hear what the experimental elements were.

It's what I imagined would be done, if done well, in adapting the book.

I much preferred Matilda the musical. I found Matilda the movie unbearably sadistic. Heavy emphasis on Emma Thompson’s Trunchbull cruelty. Maybe this is more true to Roald Dahl’s book. The kids are all fantastic though—actors, singers, dancers. I couldn’t get enough of them. And I still love Revolting Children and When I Grow Up. But I had to wade through endless screen awfulness to get to them.

I’m not sure which Matilda musical you saw on stage. Besides Trunchbull Matilda was tortured by her parents throughout the stage version. Not sure if you are just forgetting what you sat through.

True, lowwriter, Mathilda is also tortured by her parents in the stage version, but, even so, the movie musical doubles down on Trunchbull’s torture to a stomach-turning degree. What did you think of this movie version?

I liked the movie very much. I thought the stage musical was too long. But I heard the British production was better than the Broadway version.

I liked Matilda the movie a lot. I thought the characterization of Matilda went a long way to balancing out the cruelties in the dtoryline, primarily because she was so very confident and clever.
I thought Emma Thompson was very brave in allowing herself to be so vicious and unattractive. (And she is quite the beauty but gave it all up.)
When I saw the musical, I found it distracting and wrong that Trunchbull was played by a male actor. And I could understand very little of the lyrics in the songs, especially of the children. In the film, the lyrics were ever so clear.
When there’s a baddie in a children’s story/movie, I appreciate he/she being really bad, not cute. The story deals with vicious corporal punishment and neglect. So I like it being real, the way the film was.

Lashana Lynch is one of the best parts of The Woman King--and a VERY different role than Miss Honey!
