Kimberly Akimbo - for discussion

For discussion - my sister text me after seeing the musical number on the Today show. She has not seen the show yet (lives out of state). She writes, "Is this show like the male #metoo musical?" I was so confused. She explained that not knowing anything about the show because I refuse to tell her so as not to spoil anything, from the intro they gave on the Today show, all she could see was an older lady lusting after a geeky teenage boy.

Does "Anagram" work out of context?

Why are they not using "Better" or "How to..." from the top of Act Two? Debra's songs are perfect ads for this show. Or even dad's song in the car will resonate with people, I believe.

Well, that's the problem with morning television. People are often running around, getting ready for work, getting the kids ready for school, making a cup of coffee, cleaning out the coffee cup, drying their hair from the shower. Unlike later in the morning, afternoon or evening, one doesn't necessarily sit down and listen to introductions but wait until the song, the movie clip, the interview, whatever grabs you and sure enough it looks like a cougar pining for a young not that geeky man. I don't know that Debra's songs would have accomplished finding the right audience for this show or not but a followup interview with Clark might have.

It absolutely works in context, which they presented on TV.

The intro on the show clearly explained that Kimberly is a teenager who looks like an older woman, and "Better" is not appropriate for morning television.

It doesn’t matter that they explained it, it matters that the intended audience didn’t receive it.

And I think you could make Better work on morning TV with a couple lyric changes.

Really, that's a song title? There's already a great Edward Kleban song called "Better."

And Rodgers & Hammerstein used "Maria" for a song title two years after Bernstein and Sondheim did, and Bock & Harnick used "Dear Friend" as a song title in two of their shows.
