I liked Matilda the movie a lot. I thought the characterization of Matilda went a long way to balancing out the cruelties in the dtoryline, primarily because she was so very confident and clever.
I thought Emma Thompson was very brave in allowing herself to be so vicious and unattractive. (And she is quite the beauty but gave it all up.)
When I saw the musical, I found it distracting and wrong that Trunchbull was played by a male actor. And I could understand very little of the lyrics in the songs, especially of the children. In the film, the lyrics were ever so clear.
When there’s a baddie in a children’s story/movie, I appreciate he/she being really bad, not cute. The story deals with vicious corporal punishment and neglect. So I like it being real, the way the film was.
