| Reading your post and having had the movie recommended by other friends, I decided to give it a try. A little background: I was totally uninterested by what I read about the stage production and never saw it. Nothing about it resonated with me. So maybe I have"mellowed" in the interim. But this movie worked really well for me. I think Warchus did an outstanding job of making a movie out of what clearly was a show made for the stage and of finding a way to locate the story in the fantasy world it inhabits. Do I think the movie is perfection? Not completely. But it is compelling enough to keep me well engaged for 2 hours and moved frequently. The performances by the three leads (E Thompson, L Lynch, and A Weir) were terrific. I was particularly impressed with how Lynch and Weir modulated back and forth between fantasy and (some kind of ) reality. I will say that the Revolting Kids sequence was heavier handed than I enjoyed, but it works and it works out well, so all good by me. Thanks to you and to the board for the encouragement to watch it. I'm very glad I did. |
