Caught a performance tonight. Interestingly, the marketing of this show suggests that it is more a comedy than it is. It is actually an intense family drama with comedic moments.
The show deals with a range of life and death issues while examining the family's Cambodian heritage. Jennifer Lim was a stand out in a very good cast. Some of her scenes are gut wrenching.
The show is beautifully directed in the round. My friend who works at Steppenwolf told me this is the first production that fully utilizes the ability of this new space to be configured in the round (or oval to be precise.) I was in the first row and it was a very immersive experience. The set is vast and I enjoyed that I was seeing scenes in close up and others I was looking across the stage in a sort of a long shot. The shifting perspective added a dimension that I enjoyed.
