He didn't drop it in the show, he rethought it only for the standard sheet music copy (along with much of the intro verse), so that the song didn't have to rely on context so much. I tend to agree that he could have left it as is, while the verse, with its contextual reference to the show's "Miss Devereaux" did need to change.
