I'm one of the people who didn't mind and even liked Jerry Lewis as Applegate in the national tour of Damn Yankees back in the 1990's. Given his origins in the underworld, Applegate seems like an ideal character to step out of the action of the real world and share a moment with the audience. If I recall, he just stopped the show in the middle "Those Were the Good Old Days" and did stand-up for 10 minutes? It made no sense but it got the audience laughing and made a fairly mediocre song land way better than it normally does.
As you say I doubt Merman or Martin stepped out of character in shows like Gypsy or South Pacific. |
