I was not aware that Balgord had gotten to go on in Gypsy. She was cast slightly after the opening. Patti definitely did not take a vacation. The day before they recorded the album (recorded on a Monday) understudy Lenore Nemetz went on. I kicked myself for missing it, because like you I enjoy catching different takes on the same parts. I wish I had seen Balgord if she went on. Did you happen to see her? I had been disappointed in the Peters Gypsy when I went back to see Maureen Moore during Bernadette's vacation only to realize that she gave a near perfect performance of Bernadette Peters as Rose. I wish she had given an original performance. That is not a dig at either MM or BP. I really liked BP's Rose. I just I had gotten the chance to see MM's Rose. I loved the Doyle Sweeney's Lovetts- LuPone and Kaye were terrific and quite different. They both fit the production but were so dissimilar. I have seen 8 Roses, and liked all but one. That one is Staunton, but in fairness filmed stage productions often do not reflect the experience the live audience would have. I thought she and the production were insufferable. |
