I can imagine how enjoyable it was to hear that speech. Channing was a singularly entertaining legend whose daffy personality could make you forget what a witty, intelligent woman she was and I am sure that though her curtain speeches were set pieces, she had the skill and craft to convince you they were off the cuff.
