I think it's implied. Bloody Mary doesn't want Cable's money. She is not pimping her daughter. No matter how many commentators misread what is very clear in the text, she is not pimping her daughter. She is waiting for the right man. She thinks Cable is the right man. If she were pimping her daughter, she would have her marry the wealthy French planter who has proposed. She would not offer to support Cable and Liat if they want to stay on the island. If she wanted money, she would not smash Cable's watch. Her daughter is her life.
Also, like the French planters, she has moved Liat to Bali Ha'i, to keep her away from the Seabees and marines who would certainly want to deflower her.
While it's not directly stated, to me it's quite clear that Liat is a virgin. |
