Very few if any of us posting here saw the original Gypsy at an age when their opinion could be trusted on the quality and ability of the production relative to it placing the show in legend status? But I'm sure it was incredible and perfect. Of the productions I've seen live in person or on video, the relatively perfect productions-- meaning production that felt perfect at the time and had nothing I would have asked to be changed, nothing that didn't click in the direction, staging, design, casting and performance, choreo, etc-- for me include: -A Chorus Line by Michael Bennett and Bob Avian -Sweeney Todd OBC by Hal Prince and Larry Fuller -Pacific Overtures OBC by Hal Prince and Pat Birch -Evita OBC by Hal Prince and Larry Fuller -Carousel by Nicholas Hytner and Kenneth MacMillan -Sunday in the Park with George OBC by James Lapine -Into the Woods OBC by James Lapine -Assassins - broadway by Joe Mantello and Jonathan Butterell -Light in the Piazza broadway by Bart Sher and Jonathan Butterell -Nine OBC by Tommy Tune and revival by David Leveaux and Jonathan Butterell -Kiss of the Spider Woman - Hal Prince and Vincent Patterson (and Rob Marshall) -Ragtime by Frank Galati and Graciela Daniele -Bernarda Alba by Graciela Daniele -The Wild Party by George C. Wolfe and Joey McKneely -Caroline or Change OBC by George C. Wolfe and Hope Clarke -Shuffle Along by George C. Wolfe and Savion Glover -Adding Machine by David Cromer -Cabaret 1998 revival by Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall -Pippin by Bob Fosse -Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish by Joel Grey and Staś Kmieć and Jerome Robbins -Falsettos - OBC by James Lapine -Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 - off-broadway production *in the tent* -Hairspray OBC by Jack O'Brien and Jerry Mitchell -Avenue Q by Jason Moore and Ken Roberson -Rent OBC by Michael Greif -The Producers by Susan Stroman -Grand Hotel by Tommy Tune -The Will Rogers Follies by Tommy Tune -Once On This Island by Graciela Daniele -The Lion King by Julie Taymor and Garth Fagan and of course, the unbeatable best ever - FOLLIES obc. I feel confident, having seen every piece of footage that exists of the show's dress rehearsal/performance, every photo and everything written about it i can get my hands on, that I know enough to say this is my #1 pick, and that it's true. Of course almost all of these are shows after 1980 or that were filmed prior or still performing that production after. |
