But like... is this just an award for high profile replacements? Lillias I'm sure is good in it, but I haven't heard much, certainly not "you MUST go see it again to see her performance"... does she warrant a Tony nomination?
The thing with replacements is that they are not creating the role, or the role as created for a new production (very often a wholey different take on it)... they undoubtably are doing their own thing, but I'm not sure it warrants a Tony category.
But even if it does, as another poster laid out... it would be extremely complicated to make it fair. And if it existed and had enough celebrated replacement performances to be filled every year, it would almost definitely be a way to just give a Tony to someone famous each time. |
