A mere sidebar, but something I've thought of: Perkins' one famous musical theater role in Greenwillow (leaving out television's Evening Primrose) introduced, "Never Will I Marry," which Perkins sang with a searing, unmatched heartbreak. I've never heard a cover that comes close to the mysterious synergy of Perkins' persona and cathartic expression. Had he gone into Company, he would've performed "Being Alive," arguably the antidote to "Never Will I Marry." Had he done the role of Robert, his musical career would've been tethered to two standards about bachelorhood and commitment. |
