Well yes, but Assassins, by 2004, had become a very established piece done in many many regional theaters and even schools around the country (my high school even did it in 2000 i believe). I don't think I've been aware of a production of A Man of No Importance since it was at LCT (a production I found very moving and delightful). Little Shop had become, without question a favorite around the country at every level of theater, for decades before it made it's way to Broadway, besides of course a major landmark hit off-broadway run that led to a major movie of the show. Nothing like that can be said of AMONI. Hedwig was also an established favorite to produce when it made it to broadway, not just from the hit off-broadway run but also the movie. I think of the off-broadway musicals that made it to Broadway many years later, only A Man of No Importance and Violet could be argued to have escaped the "classic" rule, as I think it was called. I don't think either show is known or produced even a fraction of what Hedwig, Assassins and obviously Little Shop enjoyed after their off-broadway runs ended. (though of course it wouldn't have been fair to have in the same Tonys Violet as a new musical and Hedwig as a revival... I wish both had been able to compete as new musicals. I'd have gladly seen Aladdin and After Midnight's slots go to them, put them in Best Score and lose Aladdin and If/Then, and in Best Book and lose Aladdin and Bullets Over Broadway -- pretty painless swaps, especially given that, like Newsies, the only songs anyone cares about in Aladdin are the ones written for the movie, and that musical and show as a Broadway musical is not on the level of B&TB or even what Lion King became -- the new songs for LK are among the best best in the show, better than several of the movie songs). |
