I'm confused. I'm not arguing that Man of No Importance won't be considered a revival.
I am saying though that it is not comparable at all to Assassins, when it was ruled a revival. And I'm also saying this because I distinctly remember that when Little Shop, and Assassins etc were deemed revivals, it was in part because they'd achieved "classic" (I think that was the word) status... not because they had been seen off-Broadway. Being solidly in the musical theater repertoire made it eligible to be moved out of its Broadway "premiere" making it eligible as "new" to broadway even when it is.
Assassins was "revived" only 10 years after it's premiere (though back then it felt like 20), Here Lies Love is just about the same, but it has not had a life that I'm aware of in regional and school theaters, presumably because it wasn't licensed to have it with a Broadway production always in mind?
So I don't know if it'll be considered new... I can see it as a 50/50 chance either way. If I were ruling, I'd call it new. |
