A Few Quick Thoughts on my Recent NYC Trip |

Headed to NYC for some work meetings and took in a few shows. Some quick thoughts:
THE MUSIC MAN - The Hugh Jackman show … but I bought it. Sutton’s take on Marian really worked for me (even if I missed the clear, soprano of the part as originally written). Supporting cast was mostly stellar - though I thought Mark Linn-Baker didn’t land most of his jokes. Choreography was on point.
FUNNY GIRL - The Lea Michele show … but I bought it lol I thought she nailed the humor and the pathos. The rest of the production was pretty “meh.” Having seen the London production this was derived from, I found this a vast improvement.
KIMBERLY AKIMBO - Pure genius. A delight. Everything I love in a musical.
SOME LIKE IT HOT - It has it all, so why did it ultimately feel a bit soulless? I had a great time but utterly forgettable.
SIX - Is it a musical? I guess. Is it a great night in the theatre? Absolutely! Smile from ear to ear for the entire performance but I did feel a bit ripped off after spending Broadway prices for 70 minutes of light entertainment.
MJ - Just jettison the horrible book and let the cast sing and dance. Everyone is there for that anyway. A terrible musical full of brilliant performances. |
