You could also consider I Had A Ball (Rosetta Le Noire was a principal and the ensemble was multi-racial), The Roar of the Greasepaint (though the character is only known as The Negro, he has one hell of song to sing) and Maggie Flynn, which featured Giancarlo Esposito, Stephanie Mills and Irene Cara as refugee ex-slaves sheltered in an Irish boarding house. I do not know the books of these shows but, flops or not, they did have roles for more than one race.
