A few additions, corrections and oddities to add to your excellent list:
1958: The Body Beautiful -- the first musical by Bock & Harnick -- the second romantic couple (Barbara McNcNair & Lonnie Sattan) were the first Black romantic couple in a mixed cast musical.
1975: Original cast of Chicago: the residents of the Cook County jail were a mixed group
The original cast of Funny Girl indeed had a Black character/actress in the role of Emma -- curiously played by a white actress in the current show.
Jamaica was the one-size fits all racial casting of the period: an African-American and a Mexican playing Caribbean folks.
Rose in Bye Bye Birdie was originally intended to be of Polish background when conceived as a vehicle for Marge Champion or Carol Haney, and only became Hispanic when Chita came on board.
In Seesaw, Giancarlo Esposito's character is Latino, not black. |
