I don't know who owns the estate now. As performed as "Irma Vepp" might continue to be I don't think it brought in much money for Everett while he was alive. I never saw Tavel's work, I think I read some of it a while back. I can understand how he'd be annoyed by Ludlam. But the camp hippie style was in the air everywhere at that time and it infused both independent theater and film. I think where Ludlam rose to the top was with a certain kind of precision in bringing sustained emotional power to the silliness. Will it continue or should it continue, I don't know. The theater's audience was as vital to its work as its plays and that audience is not around anymore in the numbers it once was. If Ludlam's plays are revived they'll have a different meaning for new audiences. |
