I agree with so much you say.
I was really into the production until those last confounding moments when Henderson's character Pops made all those seemingly selfish and unreasonable choices. I could only think that as a white man, I wasn't seeing the full picture through a black man's eyes. For example, the engagement ring that was paid for by an effortless win in a poker game to which a black man might have been denied admission. Did Pops feel the ring was therefore worthless and meaningless? I don't know. Lots to think about, but in any case, I'm also surprised that there hasn't been more discussion about the moral ambiguity of the situations here or elsewhere. I'd love to hear more opinions and thoughts. |
