THIS FIERCE, FEMINIST, EPIC CABARET – ABOUT WOMEN, WAR, DISPLACEMENT, AND RESISTANCE – TAKES US INTO AN IMAGINED THEATRE, SHELTERING WOMEN IN FLIGHT FROM WARS ACROSS TIME AND ACROSS THE GLOBE.

NEW YORK, NY – AnomalousCo – a predominantly queer-woman led, feminist, transdisciplinary performance collective – presents the premier run of (beyond) Doomsday Scrolling, an original work of epic theatre about women, war, displacement, and resistance. Set in an imagined theatre sheltering women fleeing from wars across time and across the globe, this dramatic cabaret connects the invasion of Ukraine with the larger landscape of systemic aggression around the world – and centers women in the story of war.

This multilingual show is performed by 12 women and 1 man, from multiple generations and 10 countries: Ukraine, Poland, Iceland, Georgia, Moldova, Russia, Scotland, Italy, Cuba, and the US. Featuring a live band headed by Ukrainian musician Lesya Verba, with songs ranging freely over cultures, eras, and genres, the piece conveys experiences of displacement and resistance through drama and satire, personal testimony and living newspaper, and text drawn from the long tradition of women's war writing - amplifying the voices of women as social actors in wartime. From the theatrical cabarets of the Jewish Ghettos in WWII to the theatre-shelters of Ukraine in 2022, theatres around the world have played a critical role wartime - as shelters, as sites of opposition, and as spaces in which to construct sense from nightmare. Excavating that legacy, (beyond) Doomsday Scrolling traces a single day in the life of 12 women from different countries, wars, and eras, sheltering in a theatre: a microcosm of intercultural conflict, friendship, violence, and resilience. The play culminates with an action of resistance quoting the global legacy of feminist arts activism.

(beyond) Doomsday Scrolling aims to flip the script of traditional war stories - frequently structured around a large group of men, with just one or two prominent figures, and depicting femaleness through a male gaze - by emphasizing the diverse perspectives of multiple women, exploring constructs of masculinity through women's eyes. In so doing, this devised work makes use of multiple source materials: the lived experiences of our performers and/or their families; texts drawn from the international canon of women's war writing (literary, philosophical, and journalistic) both contemporary and historical; excerpts from canonical works by male playwrights centering women's experiences (Euripides, Shakespeare, Brecht); and extensive dramaturgical research.

This performance has three social-justice aims: to bear witness, to raise humanitarian aid, and to stand in international solidarity with refugees, and against the divisions being sown between peoples. To date, (beyond) Doomsday Scrolling has raised $13,000 in humanitarian aid, 100% of which were distributed among several organizations providing assistance to refugees fleeing Ukraine and refugees at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Presenting freshly devised material, the current iteration of the show will run for two weeks in February 2023 on the Mainstage at HERE - an off-off Broadway theater in SoHo, NYC. Continued development has been supported by generous rehearsal residencies provided by The Center at West Park, Target Margin Theatre, Chashama, and LEIMAY.
