I haven't seen many productions of Merrily, just this revival and the one at Roundabout a few years ago, but Gussie struck me as the only character who travels fully through time with the story but doesn't seem to change one bit. "Life is knowing what you want" she reiterates later, reminding Frank "as I told you moons ago." Seems like Gussie decided at a very young age to be a certain person and never reevaluated, and never considered it, maybe until the business with Meg at the very end. If memory serves, there is the sliiiightest hint at another layer to the character with a fleeting reference a poorer past at the very end (when they're young, so, also the beginning) of the current revival.
