The Whale, stage vs screen

I haven't seen either one. I was really looking forward to this movie. I've loved other plays by Samuel D Hunter for example Greater Clements and A Case for the Existence of God. But I've heard that the new movie is...very not good? Maybe I would be better off just reading the play?

I'm curious, from those who have seen both, what happened? Was this a case like Dear Evan Hansen where the culture moved swiftly past a play, so that a story that used to be heartwarming turned creepy? Or was it something about the way the film was made?
