Agree on all points. The staggered arrivals and departures in and out of one small apartment become giggle-inducing, a door repeatedly opened on a new character framed against fake rain or sun. But the bigger and more nuanced problem: Aronofsky luridly exploits the protagonist, relishing his binges and eventually his purges, his unnecessary on camera showering, rendering Charley as grotesque and pitiful rather than worthy of heightened compassion. Genuinely fresh insight - into grief, self destruction, tragic consequences of regrettable choices - is in short supply. Only Hong Chau survives the director’s nearly fetishized excesses.
