Describing his actions as "mental illness" was a complete cop-out. (more amplified in the movie)

Why couldn't it all have just stemmed from the way he had been treated in life--always excluded and forgotten, leading to his reveling in his new celebrity status at school. Finally, his peers noticed and valued him.

It would have made the character more complex, and even more sympathetic.
