FUSION THEATRE COMPANY TO PRESENT INNOVATIVE
NEW OPERA INFUSED PRODUTION OF EURIPIDES'
MEDEA
MARCH 1st – 12th AT THEATER FOR THE NEW CITY

THE PRODUCTION FUSES THE CLASSIC WITH EXCERPTS FROM CHERUBINI'S OPERA MEDEA – AND FEATURES CLASSICAL ACTORS WHO ARE ALSO TRAINED OPERA SINGERS

(New York, NY) - Fusion Theatre Company, under the Artistic Direction of its Founder, Eilin O'Dea, today announced that it will present an innovative new production of MEDEA, March 1st - March 12th in the Community Space Theater at Theater for the New City (155 First Avenue). Directed by O'Dea, the production fuses Euripides' classic with excerpts from Cherubini's Opera Medea – featuring a small core group of classical actors who are also classically trained opera singers - performing both genres as part of a production that seamlessly merges the two. https://www.fusiontheatrenyc.com

"We're melding an already heightened drama with excerpts from the Opera of the same title, Says O'Dea. "The inclusion of Cherubini's music adds a layer of intensity at a visceral level not possible through the spoken word alone. This allows us to seamlessly merge these two greatest of artistic genres for the ultimate theatrical experience."

Fusion's Co-Founder Gerrit Paul Groen agrees, elaborating: "Music heightens and extends an emotion or a moment. It allows for sharp contrasts and can bring subtext to the surface. Our goal is to use music, to integrate it, in such a way as to augment the play. For example, Jason abandons Medea to marry Creusa, the daughter of Creon. Creusa never appears in the play but features strongly in the opera. The entire play takes place in Medea's space. So, we've chosen to begin with Creusa and a trio of wedding music – to bring the world from which Medea is now excluded right to her doorstep. The fantastic thing about opera is that you can – in a duet or ensemble – get more than one point of view at a time. In a duet, Jason and Medea sing of their love, their conflict, and their regret and they can do it simultaneously, without fighting for space on the stage because of their separate vocal lines – both of which can be heard by the audience. So, the music intensifies and elucidates the drama."

The cast of Fusion Theatre Company's upcoming production of MEDEA features Addie Rose Brown, Eilin O'Dea, Alkis Sarantinos, Paul Gerrit Groen, John Martin, Dan Lerner, Louise Heller, Raluca Georgianna, Sharai Dottin, Maureen O'Boyle and Emerson Buchholz.

The production features the following arias: Cruesa: O amore, vieni a me; Trio: Pronube Dive; Creonte: Qui tremar devi tu, donna rea; Jason & Medea: O fatal velo d'or, quanto costi a me; Medea: E che? Io son Medea.

Set design by Dahlia Barakat, lighting design by Alexander Bartenieff, costume design is by Ida Battilana.

Eilin O'Dea trained at the prestigious LIR Conservatory of acting, Samuel Beckett Center, Trinity College Dublin as well as at the Conservatory of Music, Dublin. She has performed as a theatre actress throughout Europe and in the U.S. to critical acclaim and has performed as a Soprano both in concert and operatic forums. She founded Fusion Theatre Company in 2016 to fulfill a vision of merging classical text and opera.

Gerrit Paul Groen has performed at the Royal Opera House and with the Royal Ballet, London Lyric Opera, Garsington Opera and the Aldeburgh Festival. In Sydney, with Pacific Opera, Pinchgut Opera, Sydney Chamber Opera, Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and the Tasmanian Discovery Orchestra. In New York, with New York City Opera, the Bronx Opera, Opera Company of Brooklyn, the DiCapo Opera Theatre and in the original cast of Baz Luhrmann's La Bohème on Broadway. He studied at Manhattan School of Music, in the UK and Itay and holds an M.F.A. in Theatre Arts/Acting from Brandeis University in Boston.

Fusion Theatre Company was set up in 2016 by actor and singer Eilin O'Dea, along with actor/singer Paul Gerrit Groen - with the objective of merging Classical theatre with Classical music for the ultimate theatrical experience. To date Fusion Theatre has produced Antigone (Jean Anouilh) No Exit (Jean-Paul Sartre), The Dead (James Joyce) as well as a virtual reading of Death & The Maiden with Emmy award winning actor John Shea reading Dr Miranda. Their work to date has received critical acclaim for its innovative and bold staging of classical works as well as for the high caliber of performance.
