This is really nothing new. Commercial Off Broadway’s been on life support for many years, and its future is really dim, unfortunately. We’ll continue to get a few now and then, like the “Little Shop of Horrors” revival—but that’s only as long as the real estate remains. Economic prospects are so low, I wonder if it’ll be long before most of these venues are sold and become something else. Will we get another tenant in the Orpheum after “Stomp”? I hope so.
Off-Broadway is basically now the non-profit sector, but it’s been like that for years. Thank God for every one of them marching on.
