It's amazing that so many plays are produced off-broadway, without needing the budget or stakes or size of a Broadway production, by non-profit theaters who are not reliant on commercial success.

But what also has happened is that there are very few commercial productions of plays off-broadway that ever make a dent in the landscape of playwriting or theater-making. There is this now extremely powerful deference to the non-profit theaters and their artistic leadership in terms of what plays get produced and why, to the point where I do believe most people in the theater scene or actively viewing it assume that if a play was not chosen for the season of one of these non-profit theaters then it probably isn't very worthwhile. But the reality is that even with the number of non-profit theaters there are, there's still not that many and they only produce a handful of plays a year... so many worthwhile plays and writers are left out, and the sad thing is that even if/when they get a commercial producer willing to take the risk, there is a stigma already hovering around it that it has not been validated and awarded the gold star by a notable non-profit theater. This may just be my observation, but i do think it's pretty true. I do it too. There are only so many plays someone can see in a month or a season, and only so much money, and for a lot of people I think the stamp of approval given by being selected by one of these theaters automatically puts it on the list of things to see or even to consider seeing, which and there are enough of those plus the Broadway productions one may want to see, that other stuff has a hard time getting onto any given list.

This is just an observation, ultimately I'm more glad and grateful that there are so many non-profits who produce off-Broadway.
