I also thought the playwright's comments were odd, although she may have been exaggerating for the benefit of the TV audience. I did some web searching, and it seems the play was commissioned by a producer, so the playwright was essentially hired to perform a task rather than necessarily having been inspired to create because she was enchanted by the source material.
I also discovered that she is married to Adrian Lester, so she is making her Broadway debut just a season after his. |
