Speaking as someone who liked it very much, I think there are several reasons that point to the climate of Broadway today. The show has a strange, quirky premise that may, in summary, sound off-putting. Its unique blend of comedy and sadness may not be what mainstream audiences want right now. Although we love Victoria Clark, she is not a ticket-selling star. And it would seem as if shows with original scores have an uphill climb these days. The two new musicals to capture an audience this fall are & Juliet and A Beautiful Noise, with scores drawn from playlists of existing pop hits. |
