I think it would be very intriguing to cast a Marian in her late teens and a Harold younger than 30 and see how that works.

The problem is that people seem to want to cast actors in their mid-40's and 50's and sometimes older as Harold, so you need to adjust the ages around that so it doesn't seem icky to the audience.

But if Marian was played by an 18 year old, she might very well have a 10 year old brother.

But would a younger Marian still have the same authority? After all, she's the town librarian (though not by anyone's choice other than Miser Madison's) and seemingly the only music teacher in town, although we only see her teaching basic piano to a 10 year old girl. Although, I suppose, in that time period, a woman of 18 would probably be married with kids and Marian would still be the town old maid, so why not?
