I'm just going to jump in here to observe that what you say here tracks perilously close to language that was commonplace before gays kicked the door open and made being out an "acceptable" choice, at least in some precincts. It is also at the core of conversion therapy that ignorantly thinks being gay is "just a phase they are going through."
A couple of related points:
1. Choices in the gender and sex category are not cast in stone. Plenty of people, choosing to be straight, get married, have children, and later come out as gay. (This happens in reverse as well.) One has the right to choose and also to evolve.
2. I think it is massively incorrect to say that "most Americans understand transgender." I'm guessing there is data to support that but as a decades-long gay man, supporter of gay rights, and advocate for human rights, I don't think even I fully understand transgender (although I am working on being better). |
