| Maybe not as decisively, since Broadway is still progressing a bit more toward inclusivity than some other fields. But I still believe this would, in large part, backfire. Remember the 2012 Tonys a decade ago, when the Best Actor nominees were James Earl Jones, John Lithgow, Frank Langella, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and they all lost to James Corden? Nina Arianda won Best Actress, and deservedly so against her competition, but it was a breakthrough performance in a somewhat slight play, and I’d bet my life that if there were non-gendered categories the 2nd winner would’ve been Philip Seymour Hoffman, who had put in a lot of time doing New York theater and never won an award (for the Death of a Salesman that did, notably, win Best Revival that year, and won Mike Nichols his final Tony as Best Director. Look at Lead Actor in a Musical for that same year, which went to Steve Kazee. Would the 2nd award in a non-gendered leading musical category really have gone to Audra for her (then) fifth Tony in Porgy and Bess? Maybe, but my money would be on either Jeremy Jordan as the new kid on the block in Newsies, or even more likely, Danny Burstein for Follies who was terrific and who was already getting a bit of an ‘always the bridesmaid never the bride’ kind of vibe back then. I’m sure one could cherrypick seasons when 2 women might have won each of those categories. But there are some years when pickings have been so slim (the last 2 years I believe were generally regarded as particularly weak seasons for lead women in plays and/or musicals, in terms of the roles, not the performances ) that I dread the inevitable cries of #TonysSoMale or #TonysSoStraight from some corners - and some of us will have seen it coming. |
