I'm an Early Americanist historian. The history of non-binary people exists. Public Universal Friend and Thomasine Hall are the first two that come to mind as very early examples. But also, non-binary people exist and have existed in cultures that don't ascribe to binary gender norms. Two Spirits and hijaras for example.
It's also worth mentioning, that history is selective and curated by historians, and PLENTY of people, cultures, events, movements, and lifestyles have been erased from history. History is a narrow narrative "Where is the history?" is never a question that should end in the dismissal of a group or criteria for legitimacy. |
