But also, non-binary people exist and have existed in cultures that don't ascribe to binary gender norms. Two Spirits and hijaras for example.
Both the Zuni culture (in one example of Two Spirit figures) and South Asian culture ascribe/d to binary gender norms. Two Spirits and hijaras existed on the margins of their societies quite literally in terms of their designated living spaces. They had/have a recognized ritual and social place in those societies but not because the societies themselves don't ascribe to binary gender norms. It's more like the other way round, their identity is isolated and socialized in a ritual way because of rigid binary gender norms. |
