I think most people figure it out within the first few minutes. At first I puzzled over why they didn't restage the photographs, but I came to see the photos as the only authentic element. And it must be a rare biographical work in which the real people are better looking than the actors playing them...
There was an insert in my Playbill in which the playwright discussed Larry Sultan and his inspiration for the play.
I wouldn't call the set garish, just ugly. I couldn't figure out what room of the house it was taking place in. Certainly not a comfortable or affluent one, though we understand the parents are wealthy. They talked about moving out late in the play but it looked like they were on the way out from the beginning...
The photos are fine, but I didn't find the family remarkable enough to carry a theatrical evening. And where are the brothers? We see home movies of Larry and a brother early on. Since the brother wasn't mentioned, I was sure we were being led toward a traumatic loss that shaped the remaining family members. But other than telling us late in the play that he and a third brother are alive and well somewhere, the other siblings are entirely absent...I suppose they asked not to be included. But the absence only contributes to the feeling we're not seeing anything revelatory about this family.
