I would have to say it was. As I recall, Julia was not in great voice when the show opened and the critics came and many commented the score was out of his range. Having been previously nominated for three Tonys, it did seem his time had arrived and he would be the victor, but "Dreamgirls" wound up winning three of the four acting awards. That triumph of a musical lost the Tony for the top prize to "Nine," but certainly had the longer run (more than twice as long, in fact). |
