I always saw Victor Moore and William Gaxton were Hope and Crosby before Hope and Crosby—the often inept funny one and the straight man who could sing better and (nearly) always got the girl. Though Gaxton always had that kind of rogue twinkle in his eyes, and could be a damn sight funnier than Der Bingle. More dapper, too.

They paired in OF THEE I SING and its sequel, LET ‘EM EAT CAKE; ANYTHING GOES; LEAVE IT TO ME; LOUISIANA PURCHASE; the revue KEEP ‘EM LAUGHING; HOLLYWOOD PINAFORE; and NELLIE BLY. And one film, THE HEAT’S ON with Mae West.
