I am so curious about Morris. I count Nine in my top my five fave musicals of all time. I've listened to the cast album consistently since I discovered it in 1993. I even went to see the video recording at TOFTS. I just can't understand the acclaim for her performance. I like her songs on the cast recording, but they don't make a stronger impression than the work of Akers or Montevecchi, or even Kathi Moss. I have a special attachment to Burch for sentimental reasons but her song isn't that showy--if the score's most famous. And in clips of Morris she seems so over the top, almost a maniacal caricature of "being sexy". Seems very shrill and campy and I often find myself wondering if a man would actually find that enticing and inviting.
But I have only heard her performance spoken of in the most flattering terms. I'd love to hear more about why people thought it was so great, or if there are others who come away with the same impression that I did. |
