I am sad. Hank Beebe was a class act. My Uncle Bill (Heyer)-my Mom's brother- died about 40 years ago and I have stayed in touch with Hank since then. When we last communicated towards the end of last year when we were sharing stories about his sequel to Bathtubs Over Broadway, which was going to be about his time as a musical duo with my uncle. He was accumulating photos and stories and interviews and now I wonder what will become of that documentary. Hank never stopped keeping busy. He was married to the same woman, Nancy for about 70 years and lived in a multi-generational house in Maine, where he continued to compose. I had the experience of seeing Tuscaloosa many times as well as Hellzapoppin as it toured (D.C. and Baltimore). Hank never made it to the top of the food chain in terms of composers, yet he made a nice living and was always at peace with his standing in life (unlike my uncle who was the opposite and wanted fame and was self-destructive).
I will miss Hank. |
