Interesting to read this about not banning persons from auditioning because of their gender and compare it above with the article about The Whale where the director says he considered any number of people both gay, straight (and presumably bisexual) to play the lead but is criticized because he felt the best actor (and yes I know they were all cisgender males) was a heterosexual identifying actor.
