I haven't heard many Dudamel performances, but for whatever it's worth, in classical music discussion groups I'm in, there are definitely those who find him nothing special as a conductor, folks who find the results he gets little more than competent and sometimes a bit dull. And some in L.A. have not been all that impressed by his supposed opening up of the repertoire. Particularly surprising to some has been his relative lack of championing composers from Latin America.
Again, I can't express my own opinion of him because even though I listen to a great deal of classical music, I must admit that I gravitate to conductors of the past. Just letting you know that you're not alone. |
