That's a big 'get', no denying it. I am far from an expert, but I have seen the NY Phil and the LA Phil each about 4 times over the last couple of years. The times I saw the LA Phil, they played with such vibrancy and color, whereas, the NY Phil sounded... respectable, but surprisingly lacking in power and dynamism. Perhaps it was the type of repertory I sought out -- mostly 20th century works by Stravinsky, Ravel, Barber, Rachmaninoff. It's hard to imagine the LA Phil of the 21st century without Dudamel.
Is there any early speculation about a successor at LA Phil? |
