My take on the NY Phil under Jaap van Zweden was there was an excess of power and dynamism... and volume! I agree though that the NY Phil has had a problem for a long time now. Aside from the problems of the hall which in my opinion have not really been solved I would say that the orchestra has a personality crisis, it doesn't seem to represent anything other than the excellence and agility of their playing. I'd be curious if anyone else has a take on that.
I don't know who the successor at LA Phil will be. It might be an adventurous and exciting choice. |
