I believe the revised version was what I saw at the Charing Cross Theatre with Betty Buckley. (Just looked: ten years ago...!)
It was one of the bigger disappointments of my theatregoing life. Buckley seemed wrong for the role and the supporting cast was pretty lacklustre. I had always wanted to see how the combination of Herman/Lansbury/Champion could fail but after watching it it made sense. Giradoux is tricky; whimsy usually is. I don't know whether assembling a team of powerhouse Broadway legends was the best way to go, however they might have wanted to retain the gossamer ephemeral nature of the source material.
Donna Murphy seems like a really good choice, a mixture of steel and wispiness. Harada and Burns are both delights. I'm optimistic, whichever version they do. |
