Any musicals composed by a practicing dentist produced on Broadway other than one Ethel Merman vehicle? | |

While exploring one of my Broadway history rabbit holes recently, I discovered that one of Ethel Merman's later starring roles was in a musical composed by a practicing dentist, Happy Hunting. The composer, Harold Karr, apparently annoyed Ethel by continuing his practice as the musical was developed and began tryouts. Her frustration with that experience of working with an untested composer seems to have led to her objection to Stephen Sondheim being both composer and lyricist on Gypsy. Thus we have Jule Styne's score. After the lackluster reception of his score for Happy Hunting, Harold Karr had another musical financed for Broadway, We Take The Town, with, believe it or not, Robert Preston starring as Pancho Villa. It didn't make it on to Broadway, though, beyond its New Haven and Philadelphia tryouts. Any other practicing dentists known to get musicals produced on Broadway? |
