"Maybe right for the musical" – and maybe right for the original play, which (according to Wikipedia) was inspired by celebrated actress Marguerite Moreno, whose work can be sampled on YouTube. She seems to have specialized in slightly dotty aristocrats.
The Broadway production starred the always-fascinating Martita Hunt, who won a Tony Award for her performance and played the role for the run of just over a year; she also played the role in the City Center revival six months after the Broadway run ended.
You may not think you know anything about Martita Hunt, but if you've ever seen David Lean's legendary "David Copperfield," you do – she played Miss Havisham. |
